What happened in BC?

The
British people took all the aboriginal children to  residential school and try'd to make them British children. They made them wear the same clothes, Cut they're hair the same way, everything had to be the same. If they did anything that close to what they did in their culture they would get beaten or humiliated. The British also changed their identity so that the children sound more in sinc with the British culture. The kids would come to school and live there from September until June and then go home for a few months and them it would start all over again. The boys and girls would be separate. The nuns that were the leaders or the carers for the children (even though they really didn`t care for them) told them things that weren true. Like `If you get out of bed at night the demons of the under world will come take you away` which made the children sad and scared. Overall the residential schools made the children become people they were not mean`t to be.

Tell me more about the Aboriginal culture?

The Aboriginal culture thought that if you didn`t hurt the wildlife the wildlife wouldn`t hurt you. The Aboriginal used berries flowers and other natural things to make remedys to solves problems like if you had a cold, or if you had a headache. Animals were treated nicely and cared for. They would only hunt if they needed food, they never just hunted animals for no apparent reason. You would have to be desperate to hunt animals. In the book`My Name Is Seepeetza if a person dies they have a big celebration called a
potluch to celebrate the persons life.

What were residential schools?

Residential schools were where the Aboriginal children were sent to be colonized. They wanted them to believe in the same religions as the British people, Speak English and be proper like the British people. I they disobeyed or did anything wrong they would have a consequence many children commit suicide or died due to the British harsh ways. The children would be turned into different people personality wise and Beliefs. I think residential schools are bad because I think anyone can believe in whatever they want to believe in. Sending children to live in a school for 10 months is bad, I don't know what I would do if I was away from my family that long for 12 years straight.

What happened to families?

Families were hurt and wreaked during the time period of residential school. Most children lost their believes or ways of life. The Aboriginal children were sent to school not how we are today. Today we go to school and come home to our families. In residential schools they went to school for 10 months and lived at the school. They only went home when it was Christmas and Summer. Then they would go to school until they graduate.

What Land are we on?

We are on Coast Sailish land. From the aboriginals. They let us on the land but there are still some areas that are Aboriginal land.

Q: Do you think Cole is a victim or a villian?
A: I think that Cole is a bit of both. He has done some horrible things in the past but when his Father abuses him I think he`s a villian.

Q:How do you feel Peter`s Driscals family feels?
A: I feel angry that Cole would hurt someone like that. I do think that the golden rule really is true. Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

Q: Explain the cake scene as a metaphor.
A: The ingredients used to make cake may seem very gross and yucky. When mixed together they make something sweet and yummy. I think what Garvey was trying to pass on is that the healing circle is filled with people with anger but when they all heal together the problem is solved.

Q:Write a trailer or a summary on chapter 1-8 explain as someone has not read the book before.
A: Cole Matthews has had lots of second chances but his time this is his last. After robbing a store and bragging about it at school. A pupil in Coles school named Peter Driscal tells on him. Cole is furious and beats Peter up.

Touching Spirit Bear Reflection

In the first part of the book, Touching Spirit Bear we meet Cole Mathews. Cole is a 15 year old boy who robbed a hardware store and bragged about it at school. A boy named Peter Driscal told the police about what Cole did. Cole denies it and beats Peter up by bashing his head against the sidewalk. Peter now has major brain issues because of what Cole did.

Next we meet Garvey a parole officer in Minneapolis. He tries to help Cole because he thinks that he is doing good by helping others. He is trying to turn Cole around.  Garvey suggests Circle Justice to Cole. Circle Justice is an aboriginal group of people that tries to gather in a circle or group heal a person making the offender and the victim solve their problem together.. If they didn't try Circle Justice the offender would have to go to jail.  When Cole agreed to do the Circle Justice lots of people showed up including Peter. Garvey. Garvey suggested sending Cole to a remote island in Alaska so he can he can spend time thinking about what he did.. Everyone agreed and Cole is sent to the island by himself.

One of the reasons why Cole is so angry in life is his Dad beats him when he is drunk. Coles Dad agrees Cole should go to the island and sends him with hunting supplies and items for survival. Cole gets angry and thinks that the gift is just a pity gift to make his parents feel like they contributed in some way. Cole is not pleased with this gift so he decides to burn everything. Garvey and and Edwin and the Elder Tinglet (one of the aboriginals) would come back soon to check on Cole  Cole wanted to get off this island before they returned. Cole starts to swim off the island. He finally
realizes that he has gotten nowhere so he gives up, swims back to the island and he is numb and cold. Then he sees a white glowing bear. called the Spirit Bear. He gets annoyed at its presence and throws a rock at it. When he turns to get his hunting blade the bear disappears. Later Cole spots the bear staring at him. He grabs his knife and starts to walk up to the bear until he is very close. He expects the bear to run in panic but instead the bear fights back clawing at Cole and seriously injures him. Cole blacks out and wakes up injured. When Cole wakes up he realizes that he can't move anything only his hand. He sees seagulls eating his flesh. For a couple of days it rains or shines. Cole is stuck sitting in pain, helpless. Then Cole spots the spirit bear and is scared that the Spirit Bear is going to finish him off. Instead the Spirit Bear sits and waits and stands near Cole. Cole grabs a wad of the Spirit Bears fur. Minutes later the bear walks towards the water and swims away. Garvey and Edwin come to check on Cole, see that he is injured and take him to a hospital. They thought that Cole had a tree fall on him but actually it was a bear attack. When Cole is about to be loaded on an airplane to a better hospital, he tells Garvey and Edwin about the Spirit Bear. Edwin and Garvey think that its not true. Cole was about to show them the wad of Spirit Bear hair but then decides that he doesn't need to prove anything. He doesn't need any more proof than his words. Cole decides he wants to try to and stop spending his life being so angry. .

I am REALLY enjoying this book  : D

Global Issues

Global Issues are big problems that happen all over the world and need to be fixed. Some ideas that you may know about are..
War, H2O shortages, Human Rights, and Bumble bees going endangered. The issue that I find the most interesting is Bumble Bees going extinct. Some ways to raise awareness for that issue is sign patitions. Another way is to write blogs or make posters. I personally think this issue is very bad. If we lose our bees we would lose lots of our crops but i`m sure it must be terrible for farmers to lose your crops to bunnies and insects, maybe they could think of another solution to this problem. Overall I think we can fix this. As long as we all work together!
